How can we help?

Getting started

4

A desktop screenwriting editor for everything from feature films to podcasts, from theatre to graphic novels. It formats the text automatically based on the block type, and brings together planning tools (cards, tasks, goals), analysis (statistics, relationship map) and revision in one place.

Yes. It’s free and subscription-free. You download, install and use it. No required account and no limit on the number of scripts.

No. Actus is local-first and works offline. Internet is only needed to download the app, get updates or use the AI assistant (optional).

On the home screen, create a Project and a Script inside it, or create a "standalone script" with no project. Choose the format (film, series, theatre, podcast, book, comics…) and start writing.

Download & installation

3

Today Actus runs on Windows (10 or later, 64-bit) and macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel, 11+). Check the Download page for the available versions.

Download the installer (.msi/.exe), run it and follow the wizard. The app sets up the .actus and .pactus file associations automatically.

Yes. When a new version is available, Actus lets you know inside the app and you update with one click. Your data is preserved.

Writing & editor

5

No. You type and Actus applies capitalization, indents and spacing based on the block (Scene, Action, Character, Dialogue, Transition…). Each format has its own blocks.

It hides the surrounding interface and leaves only the page and the text, so you can write without distraction.

In the editor toolbar and in the script Settings: there are margin presets (Screenplay/Narrow/Wide), scene numbering, page breaks and spacing.

Yes, in 4 languages (PT-BR, PT-PT, EN, ES). You can add exceptions (proper names, brands, terms) so they aren’t flagged.

The Ctrl+F shortcut opens a find-and-replace panel, with options for case sensitivity, whole word and scope by version.

Organization & planning

3

A visual board for planning the story: create scene, character, location or note cards, organize them in Canvas or List and link them to see the connections.

Organize tasks in List, Board or Calendar with due date, priority and checklist. Set goals (lines, pages, scenes, time) and track your streak on an activity calendar.

Yes. There are projects (which group scripts) and standalone scripts, and you can organize them into folders.

Analysis

2

Characters (lines and scenes), scenes, locations, INT × EXT breakdown, pages, words, reading time and composition by block type, all updated in real time.

It shows the story’s relationships as a graph: characters, locations and clusters, generated automatically from the script, with detail levels.

Revision & comments

2

In Revision Mode, each change is marked for you to accept or reject. When you finish, the previous version is kept as a locked backup.

Select a passage, right-click and choose "New Comment". You can resolve and reopen comments whenever you want.

AI Assistant

1

The AI is optional. You log in on the provider’s own site (no key is stored in the app) and only the passage you select is sent, when you decide. Privacy first.

Export & import

3

PDF (with or without cover, full document or specific ranges), plus Fountain, FDX, .actus (script) and .pactus (project).

Yes: Fountain (.fountain), Final Draft (.fdx), and the Actus formats (.actus and .pactus).

It includes the work’s title, author(s) and project contacts on the front of the PDF.

Files, data & privacy

4

On your computer. The app saves automatically (every ~1.5s, with Ctrl+S always available) and keeps a copy in a folder of yours (.actus per script, .pactus per project).

No. Actus is local-first. Nothing is sent to servers. The only exception is the AI, and only the passage you choose to send.

Since everything is in your storage folder, just copy that folder (or version the .actus/.pactus files). You set the location in Settings → Storage.

Yes, in Settings → Storage → Default scripts location.

Appearance & language

2

Yes: three themes (Parchment, Slate, Neutral).

Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), English and Spanish.

Common issues

3

This happens if the folder was moved or is inaccessible. In Settings → Storage, select a new folder to start writing the copies again.

No. Writing is local and saved automatically. It doesn’t depend on the internet.
